Ideality vs. Reality

Posted by Michelle on August 11th, 2008

As a trying-to-recover perfectionist, I will admit that it’s always been difficult for me to process the ideal when I know that my reality is often so far from the ideal. I have spent a good portion of my life feeling like I am never enough. I have been known to have General Conferences end, […]

God Speaks, not Spake

Posted by Eric Nielson on August 4th, 2008

I am giving a talk in Sacrament meeting on Sunday.  I thought I might spit out a post as part of the preparation.  The talk is to be based on Elder Hollands talk in General Conference called ‘My Words Never Cease’
There are people out there who are saying that Mormons are not Christians.  This is […]

President Uchtdorf and the Faith of our Father (Singular)

Posted by Eric Nielson on April 17th, 2008

I had not realized until I read the talk at lds.org that President Uchtdorf had entitled his talk ‘Faith of Our Father’ instead of ‘Faith of our Fathers’. The singular form of the word is important and central to his intended message.

On Suicide

Posted by Eric Nielson on July 30th, 2007

One of the full-time missionaries currently serving in our ward recently received some sad and disturbing news. His father committed suicide. It has been known that his father struggled with depression. His mother left for a few minutes to run some errands, and while she was out, his father shot himself in the head. The […]

Question Regarding Priesthood Quorums

Posted by Michelle on July 22nd, 2007

I ran across something today that I don’t understand. Why is there an increasing number of members of priesthood quorums up through the office of an elder (quorums of deacons have up to 12 members, teachers = 24 members, priests = 48, and elders = 96 (see Doctrine and Covenants 107:85-87). And then, to make […]

Vivaporous Birth Control

Posted by Matt W. on April 15th, 2007

Some people wonder how I can believe that we have a literal relationship with God the Father and literally have his attributes without Vivaporous Birth. This is an attempt to answer.

Is Divine fatherhood in any sense similar to human fatherhood?
The analogues are more profound than any Christian writer since the first century has dared to examine. For our […]

Separate From the World

Posted by jettboy on March 23rd, 2007

For the past few years President Hinkley has tried to make people of the world, particularly the United States, more familiar with Mormons. He has gone on television many times and talked about his faith and the Church in general. It is hard to say how successful that has been in changing perceptions. His main […]

There are holes in the bucket, and the bucket is the Church.

Posted by Matt W. on February 26th, 2007

This weekend was our local Stake conference, and the priesthood section focused on home teaching and inactive members. One of the speakers uses a great analogy to briefly discuss a problem with our church.
He noted (And I am paraphrasing from memory): “We can bring as many members as we want into the church [and I […]

I am a Viviparous Child of God

Posted by Eric Nielson on January 8th, 2007

Viviparous is a fancy-schmancy word that I would not know if it weren’t for GeoffJ.
Not long ago I wrote a post about being a literal child of God. Jeff Lindsay wrote a post that expresses this same thought using the main two scriptures I had used. I have also recently read ‘The Philosophical Basis of […]

The Sinless Life

Posted by Eric Nielson on December 18th, 2006

An aspect of the life of Christ that has caused me to marvel is the sinless life that he lead. That astounds me. Contemplating anyone surviving their entire lives without being guilty of sin to any degree stretches the limits of my imagination. Did he really accomplish such an impressive thing as a sinless life?
