Valerie

Posted by Eric Nielson on September 11th, 2007

Valerie joined the church several years ago. She was pregnant, and came to church alone. Her husband had no interest in the church. She hoped that some day he would show some interest, and in the meantime was hoping to raise her first child in the gospel. Her parents and brother were also hopeful future [...]

Stake Youth Dances -OR- Why Dancing is So Stupid

Posted by Eric Nielson on August 27th, 2007

One of my favorite television shows is Seinfeld. In one of the episodes Jerry is talking to his girlfriend of the week, and the conversation goes something like this:
GotW: Do you like dancing, Jerry?
Jerry: Not really.
GotW: Why not?
Jerry: Because dancing is so stupid.
Jerry pretty well sums up my feelings about dancing. I don’t like dancing [...]

On Suicide

Posted by Eric Nielson on July 30th, 2007

One of the full-time missionaries currently serving in our ward recently received some sad and disturbing news. His father committed suicide. It has been known that his father struggled with depression. His mother left for a few minutes to run some errands, and while she was out, his father shot himself in the head. The [...]

Ethical Dilemmas

Posted by Michelle on July 6th, 2007

A recent thread over at T&S has caused me to reflect on some discussions I had a couple of years ago about the many different ethical dilemmas that people can face in a business situation. Ethical dilemmas certainly are encountered by most people, but I think that our religion can add some twists to some [...]

The image of God…
A child of heavenly parents…
A divine nature and destiny… [...]

Joseph Smith on Women and laying on of hands

Posted by Matt W. on April 25th, 2007

As there has been much discussion in the bloggernacle about Women and the ordinances of the church, I thought it would be appropriate to post some excerpts of a sermon of Joseph Smith, given on the subject to the relief society in Nauvoo. It is hoped that this information will be a means of easing [...]

The Stillbirth of Mormon Art

Posted by jettboy on April 15th, 2007

For many years now artists who are Mormon have tried to bring a different sense of the creative within the Church. The most recent incarnation of reaching beyond the “Deseret Book” and “Ensign Cover” material has been movies. Recently, the self-proclaimed creator of Mormon cinema announced he no longer is part of the Church, having [...]
