What is a Confirmation?

Posted by Connor on May 31st, 2007

After a convert is baptized for a remission of their sins, they are confirmed a member of the Church.
What does that mean?
The Bible Dictionary entry for ‘confirmation’ defines it thusly:
Confirmation includes more than conferring the gift of the Holy Ghost. To confirm means to “make more sure.” The ordinance of confirmation completes the […]

Joseph Smith, speaking on the atonement

Posted by Matt W. on May 29th, 2007

What did Joseph Smith believe about the atonement of Christ? How did he understand it? It is known that he felt it was the central tenant and foundation of our religion, but what did the prophet understand of it’s place in the grand scheme of things. The following quote provides some clues.
It is reasonable […]

Why I went on a mission.

Posted by Matt W. on May 24th, 2007

Statistics show that 1 in 5 young LDS men answer the call that every worthy young man should serve a mission. This number makes me sad, as my mission was one of the greatest experiences of my life. But, I was almost part of the 4 in 5, and not the 1, so I can […]

Notes on Divine Motherhood

Posted by jettboy on May 13th, 2007

One of the unique doctrines of the LDS Church is the existence of a Mother in Heaven. It is more than a trivial speculative idea, but part of the foundational teachings associated with Exaltation. Although particulars are not available, the doctrine is enshrined in one of the most beloved hymns “Oh My Father” by Eliza […]

Issues in Mormon Masculinism

Posted by Eric Nielson on May 7th, 2007

I would first like to say that I do not consider myself a masculinist, and that as far as I know nobody in my family is a masculinist. None of my best friends are masculinists. I am not even sure that masculinism and masculinist are words. If they are, I am probably not spelling them […]

What it takes for a ward to function.

Posted by Matt W. on May 7th, 2007

It takes ~79 volunteers to fully equip an LDS ward. Of these callings, 20 must be women (RS, YW, Primary), 29 must be men (Bishopric, HPGL, EQP, SSP, YM, WML, clerk, ex sec.) and 30 can be either (pianists, choristers, sunday school teachers, primary teachers.) 27 of all the callings together are teaching positions.(RS/YW/YM/HP/EQ/SS/Primary teacher) […]
