Fringes Only Please!

Posted by Eric Nielson on April 30th, 2007

I have just finished watching the first episode of ‘The Mormons’ on PBS. I imagine that many members of the church who are viewing this experienced a wide range of emotions and reactions. From my perspective the show seems to be exaggerating the fringes of what the church is about. Sure the fringes are there, […]

The Dialogue of Revelation

Posted by jettboy on April 29th, 2007

One of the more interesting ideas in By the Hand of Mormon by  Terryl L. Givens is that the Book of Mormon introduces a form of revelation that is rejected by most Western religions. He states that almost all Christians have described the word “Revelation” as a metaphorical transmission of God’s revealing Himself. There is […]

a personal revelation

Posted by Matt W. on April 26th, 2007

Disclaimer: this is not a doctrinal dissertation, and is not a claim to authority or anything of the kind. It is a description of what I consider possibly the only time in my life, outside of the affirmation of current doctrines explicitly taught in the church, where I was given a personal revelation of a […]

Barry Switzer Claims that BYU Bugged Headphones

Posted by Eric Nielson on April 26th, 2007

Does anybody know anything about this?  I came across this blog that reports that ESPN radio host Collin Cowherd let it slip that the former Oklahoma football coach believes that BYU bugged opponents headphones during games.  Seems far fetched to me.  The blog rumor can be seen here.

Joseph Smith on Women and laying on of hands

Posted by Matt W. on April 25th, 2007

As there has been much discussion in the bloggernacle about Women and the ordinances of the church, I thought it would be appropriate to post some excerpts of a sermon of Joseph Smith, given on the subject to the relief society in Nauvoo. It is hoped that this information will be a means of easing […]

Please Welcome Liz Muir

Posted by Eric Nielson on April 21st, 2007

Bwak, bwak, bwak. The spherical chicken is in the barge.
We are pleased to announce Liz Muir as a guest blogger at BofJ. Liz is going to Europe somewhere this summer, broken shoulder and all. Hopefully we can hear from her frequently while she is there.
Liz comes from a long line of Mormons who were apparently […]

Orthodoxy

Orthodoxy is an interesting subject as it pertains to the LDS faith. The word itself comes from the Greek ortho (’right’, ‘correct’) and doxa (’thought’, ‘teaching’, ‘glorification’). As it relates to religion, the word can be defined as an authorized or accepted set of religious beliefs and doctrines.
My personal observations lead […]

Fast -> Conference -> Feast

Posted by Eric Nielson on April 16th, 2007

I have been reflecting on the last few weeks, and some of the unique worship activities we have had. First, we had a Fast Sunday on the last week of March. When we fast we normally go without food and drink for a 24 hour period of time. This is accompanied by purposeful prayer and […]

Vivaporous Birth Control

Posted by Matt W. on April 15th, 2007

Some people wonder how I can believe that we have a literal relationship with God the Father and literally have his attributes without Vivaporous Birth. This is an attempt to answer.

Is Divine fatherhood in any sense similar to human fatherhood?
The analogues are more profound than any Christian writer since the first century has dared to examine. For our […]

The Stillbirth of Mormon Art

Posted by jettboy on April 15th, 2007

For many years now artists who are Mormon have tried to bring a different sense of the creative within the Church. The most recent incarnation of reaching beyond the “Deseret Book” and “Ensign Cover” material has been movies. Recently, the self-proclaimed creator of Mormon cinema announced he no longer is part of the Church, having […]
