A Song for an Unsung Hero

Posted by Eric Nielson on March 5th, 2007

At the time of this writing the Niblet award voting is over, but winners have not been announced. I expect winners to be announced in about 5-7 weeks.

There are several members of the BofJ staff that have been nominated for awards. Naiah and Tyler were nominated for best post, Matt W was nominated as best commenter, and Connor was nominated as unsung hero. I would like to congratulate them on their nominations and say that I feel they are vey well deserved. I hope I didn’t leave anyone out.

For some reason I have been thinking about Connor lately, and what an unsung hero he really is. Not only on the blogs, where he has supplied a lot of functionality for the entire bloggernacle and helped several people with their blogs, but he is an unsung hero in many ways. I think a lot of people are not aware of what a charitable person he is. He always seems to have a cause and is willing to put in his time, talents and money behind it. Because of this example by Connor, and a few other charitable souls on the bloggernacle, I have set a goal to double my fast offerings, contribute more to humanitarian aid, and be more proactive in helping family members who may be in need. Connor has also been a defender of the faith on scores of controversial issues.

So what does an unsung hero need that he doesn’t already have? A song of course. Now, I am not sure I am the best one to do this, but I would like to dedicate a song from my favorite source to Connor. It did need a couple of minor tweeks to the lyrics to fit, but from my perspective it fits pretty well. The song is ‘New World Man’ from you know who.

He’s a rebel and a runner
He’s a signal turning green
He’s a restless young romantic
Wants to run the big machine

He’s got a problem with his his poisons
But you know he’ll find a cure
He’s cleaning up his systems
To keep his nature pure

Learning to match the beat of the Old World man
Learning to catch the heat of the Third World man

He’s got to make his own mistakes
And learn to mend the mess he makes
He’s old enough to know what’s right
But young enough to choose it
He’s nobel enough to win the world
But meek enough to lose it-

He’s a New World man…

He’s a radio receiver
Tuned to factories and farms
He’s a writer and arranger
And a young boy bearing arms
He’s got a problem with his power
With weapons on patrol
He’s got to walk a fine line
And keep his self-control

Trying to save the day for the Old World man
Trying to pave the way for the Third World man

He’s not concerned with yesterday
He knows constant change is here today
He’s noble enough to know what’s right
And meek enough to choose it
He’s wise enough to win the world
But cool enough to lose it-

He’s a New World man…

So, now the unsung hero has a song. You are a good and talented guy my friend. Thanks for making the Bloggernacle a better place.

    Wow…

    Thank you.

Eric, there should be a Niblet category for loyal friend. You would win it hands down.
This post brings up some questions in my mind about this whole virtual world of blogs. I’m wondering if you have ever met Conner in person. If not, don’t you think it is interesting that people can develop feelings of friendship through a blog as close, if not closer, than in the “real” world? Are these kinds of friendships real? Does blogging with people who you will probably never see make it easier to be your true self?

(BTW-I agree that Conner seems like a fine person- good vibes all around!)

Thanks CJones. I can not think of another categorie I would rather be considered for.

I have not ever met Connor in person. Yes it is interesting - the friendships we develop here. In some ways I think I may be a better ‘friend’ in this world than the real one. I am painfully shy/quite/intorverted in real life. For me it is much easier to open up to people on blogs than face to face. I’m not sure why that is.

I have also appreciated your friendship and support over the months here. (if you ever want to guest post again let me know, I’m sure we can work something out). And yes, Connor is a fine chap - or at least it seems that way.

    I second the motion!

I have very often pondered about this subject. I have several “virtual” friends that I’ve met through blogging or otherwise, and I find it intriguing the different strengths such an interaction can provide. There are definitely pros and cons to be weighed in such a relationship

And yes, Connor is a fine chap - or at least it seems that way.

Bwahaha, I’ve deceived you all!! :)

I at least left out M&M as a best commenter nominee. Sorry Michelle! You deserved a nomination for that.

No worries, Eric. Thanks for the kind thought.

    BTW, results apparently are in.
