Blogging is for geeks
Posted by Ryan on February 23rd, 2006
I read an article this morning in Inc. Magazine that detailed the author’s self-conscious addiction to blogs. The addiction was quickly justified by pointing out that as a new business owner, there is much to be learned by perusing the blogs of venture capitalists and other small business owners. Yet for all the posturing and rationalization, I still think that deep down inside he felt like a big geek.
So why the embarrassment? I must admit that there are certain social circles of mine that I was initially reluctant to announce our blog to as well. I could just envision it…
Everything would happen in seeming slow-motion. Just as I break the bloggorrible news, their eyebrows slowly raise and their mouth opens to pronounce (in the deep slow-motion voice) “Whaaaaaaat aaaaaa geeeeeeeek.” To which I respond (the self-proclaimed “non-crier”) with a flood of tears and a stuttering: “y-y-y- ou don’t understand… p-p-p-people like me on the internet, I have important things to say!!!” And they laugh as I run away sobbing.
Yeah. Maybe not so dramatic, but you get what I mean. As time has gone on, I have been more open with my blogging habits, Mostly because I have developed a pretty good defense against the slings and arrows of “nerd” and “loser”. I’ve come to find that everybody, when challenged has a little bit of geek about them.
Of course, now I have to deal with the friends who might say: “Yeah blogging is okay, but blogging about church? What a geek.”
Sigh… I hate the quest for acceptance. It ruins all my fun.

I accept you. But I don’t know if that helps, or puts you in the company you want to be in.

Yeah, you’re a total GEEK!
No matter, I accept you too. But I only accept you to the extent that you stop crying; I swear, every time I turn around, there you are crying again! Just STOP.
Furthermore, why is being a geek so wrong? Why is it such a pejoritive word? I suspect it’s because the majority uses it to belittle those who they feel threatened by (i.e. because their superior intellectual power threatens them).
So, don’t worry, you’re only a geek to those who feel threatened by you. You GEEK!
